Each of our cottages have private paved areas either to the front or to the back with table and chairs perfect for using the BBQ. Dipper and the Mill both have large enclosed garden areas however although still plenty of space College and Bowmont are less private as the cottages are joined. Each cottage has its own shed where you will find ample of logs along with plenty of extra space for storage/parking.
There is oodles of walking/cycling on the doorstep, we do ask that you keep away from the livestock as Lanton is a working farm and they can be very protective of their young, especially with dogs about!
At Lanton we run a three hundred (ish) Luing and Sim Luing herd. Seeking to offset feed, management and building costs, the Luing cow is guaranteed a great investment here at Lanton. Luings are an extremely hardy, efficient, and fertile cow, they are well known for their ability to thrive off grass and adverse weather with good feet and strong bones. Here at Lanton we use the winning combination of crossing Luing cows with a Simental bull.
The idea behind the “Sim- Luing” is to produce an easy going, low maintenance and economical cow. We find the Sim Luings are extremely efficient at converting grass and therefore keeping feeding costs to a minimum, they are also very reliable when it comes to producing and rearing a calf each year with plenty of milk. With these valuable traits and carbon efficiencies, these cows offer an increased profitability and suitability within the present climate.
The horse department at Lanton is a very busy highly driven yard of approximately 30 horses. Young sport horses are sourced from Ireland (usually) produced and sold with potential in Eventing. The odd one or two are kept for high level competition. Along with this we have an increasing field of point-to-point horses in training. National hunt bred foals are purchased from Goffs or Tattersalls and are represented there as three-year-olds. We do have our own broodmares whose offspring are retained to point to point or if good enough to run under rules. There is also a collection of old friends running around, horses we have all had plenty of fun with over the years and are now enjoying a well-earned retirement.
With all the space and the endless walking, Crookhouse is a dogs heaven. We do welcome dogs at Crookhouse, 2 dogs in each cottage are free of charge and a 3rd dog is £20, if you wish to bring dogs please do mention it whilst booking. We do ask that dogs are kept in the utility rooms when wet, dirty and sleeping. Also please no dogs on the sofas or in the bedrooms.
Crookhouse is a great location for children, there is ever lasting exploring to be done! We have facilities for young children including, cots, highchairs and some of the king size beds have zips which can be made into two twins- please phone if required prior to your arrival. There is an area that we call the “Idle Hound” which is a communal building with table tennis etc.
At Crookhouse we provide luxury Egyptian cotton bedding with feather and duck down pillows and duvets. In the bathrooms there are fresh towels and luxury soaps etc.
All the cottages include WIFI, landline, TV with a DVD and SKY.
Please let the management team aware if you would like your beds made as singles, if you are bringing dogs and if you would like a cot/ high chair. Thank you.
We recommend using post code NE71 6TH for Sat Navs as the post code for Crookhouse takes you to the wrong side of the river! When you get to Lanton Estate follow the signs further along to Crookhouse. Some more detailed instructions as follows:
Follow the A697/A698 south to Coldstream over the River Tweed and on into Cornhill-on-Tweed. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit left signposted A697 to Morpeth. Continue 7 miles to the village of Milfield. On reaching Milfield turn right opposite the Red Lion Hotel. Follow that road for approximately 2 miles, down a hill to a T Junction at Lanton. Turn right. ( Follow instructions from Lanton Estate below).
Follow the A1 heading north. At Morpeth take the A697 signposted Coldstream/Wooler and follow the road for about 40 minutes. After the town of Wooler look out for a sign for “Lanton” to the left its approx. 5 miles north of Wooler. Keep on this road, you will see a sign for the Crookhouse Collection outside Lanton Estate Stable yard. (Follow instructions from Lanton Estate below).
Continue on past a row of cottages on your right and Lanton farm steading will be on your left. Follow this single track road with the River Glen to your left and after approx. 0.5 mile you will come to Lanton Mill steading directly in front of you, take the “bypass” around the small holding to the right hand side. You have approx. 1.5 miles to travel and a few more cattle grids to cross before reaching Crookhouse Cottages. Please note that there are concrete “humps” on the road up the hill so please drive slowly, watching out for cattle and sheep. Over the penultimate cattle grid you will be able to see Crookhouse Cottages on the left hand side. College and Bowmont are the initial cottages you can see, the Mill is behind them and Dipper is the furthest along the road before you reach the dead-end. Your cottage is sign posted.
Crookhouse is accessed via a private estate road which becomes a predominantly hard-covered track. The road involves a number of cattle grids, is steep in places and could possibly be scattered with livestock so please be careful. During icy and snowy conditions 4WD vehicles are recommended.
Typical arrival time is 4pm and departure is 10am, check in days are flexible and can be discussed with the management team. You will be sent a letter prior to arrival for more information regarding check in.
All cottages have large private parking areas in addition to this there is one large communal undercover area set in the middle of the collection on the right hand side. If you are staying in Bowmont or College please use the parking area behind the cottages to not destruct the beautiful views.
We kindly ask that there is no smoking inside any of the properties. Thank You.
